RELEASE: From Spokane to Seattle, Over 180 Childcare Providers Say NO to Initiative 2109
Are you a parent with kids in child care? Chances are good your provider wants you to vote NO on Initiative 2109. Over 180 child care providers across the state have endorsed the NO On Initiative 2109 campaign because of the devastating impacts it would have on affordable child care.
Providers opposing the measure come from every region across the state and range from large providers like Kindercare, which has over 1000 centers nationwide including locations Seattle, Vancouver, Yakima, and Spokane, to small family owned daycare centers.
If Initiative 2109 passes, it will cut hundreds of millions of dollars in funding and over 10,000 early learning and pre-k slots annually. The funding lost would come from programs like Working Connections Child Care, which helps working parents afford high quality early learning programs. Polling shows that 87% of voters want to see more money invested in childcare.
“Initiative 2109 would cut billions of dollars in child care assistance. Every one of the parents whose kids I look after and educate relies on this assistance. These parents are healthcare workers, farmworkers, and warehouse workers. They do jobs that are essential for our community to thrive. If Initiative 2109 passes, these parents will be unable to afford childcare and will not be able to do these critical jobs. Kids will miss opportunities, parents will lose income, and our community will suffer,” said Nohemi Bautista, Owner of CasaLuna Daycare Center in Yakima.
“The high-quality child care that we provide is essential for kids and families to thrive. And Initiative 2109 is a direct threat to our ability to provide it. Initiative 2109 will take away billions of dollars in childcare funding. The families who enroll their children in our center rely on this funding. If Initiative 2109 passes, as many as half of the families we work with will no longer be able to afford childcare. This would be catastrophic for these kids and their families. And for my small business,” said Diana Llanes, Owner of Once Upon a Time Bilingual Childcare Center in Burien.

Washington voters will decide this fall whether or not to pass Initiative 2109, to cut over $2.2 billion in 5 years from education, childcare, and early learning to hand a tax cut to less than 1% of extremely wealthy Washingtonians by repealing the state’s limited capital gains tax on extraordinary profits.
The money raised by the tax goes to funding education, childcare and early learning. Sales of real estate, retirement assets, small businesses, and farms are exempted. It applies only to annual profits above $250,000 a year from the sales of financial assets such as stocks and bonds.
