NO On 2109 Campaign is Powered by Over 100 Parents Statewide
Constance McBarron, a communications manager and mother of two from Seattle is the star of the NO On 2109 campaign’s latest ad. In the ad, Constance highlights how Initiative 2109 will cut billions of dollars from education and childcare by eliminating the state’s capital gains, which 99.8% of Washingtonians do not pay.
Constance is one of over 100 parents across the state who are working to spread the word about the devastating impacts of Initiative 2109. With just days before ballots hit mailboxes, the NO On 2109 Campaign is ramping up its voter contact program to ensure people know what is at stake in this election. At the heart of the campaign’s efforts are parents like Constance who have signed on to the campaign. Many of these parents are volunteering their time to make calls to voters informing them of Initiative 2109’s cuts to childcare and education. The campaign has made over 39,143 calls.
Katrina Peters, the NO On 2109 campaign’s field organizer in Spokane and a mother of three, began as a volunteer advocate against the initiative. She joined the campaign in September because she knew the stakes were high for her and her community. “Nobody knows the impact that cuts to education and childcare will have on kids better than their parents. We’re some of the campaign’s most powerful messengers because it's personal for us. These conversations we’re having day in and day out with voters are so important,” said Peters.
Samantha Casne, the NO On 2109 Campaign Manager, who is also a parent, said that so far the overwhelming majority of voters contacted are opposing the initiative. “When people understand that this is a tax cut for the rich that cuts education and childcare, it’s not a tough choice. Our opponents have had no choice but to resort to deceptive messaging. That’s why we’re going to continue to ramp up our voter contact efforts through election day to make sure everyone has the facts,” she said.
About I-2109
Washington voters will decide this fall whether or not to pass Initiative 2109, to cut over $2.2 billion in 5 years from education, childcare, and early learning to hand a tax cut to less than 1% of extremely wealthy Washingtonians by repealing the state’s limited capital gains tax on extraordinary profits.
The money raised by the tax goes to funding education, childcare and early learning. Sales of real estate, retirement assets, small businesses, and farms are exempted. It applies only to annual profits above $250,000 a year from the sales of financial assets such as stocks and bonds.
